  நுவார் கதைகளை பற்றி பலர் அறிந்திருக்கலாம். Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Michael Cain, James Ellroy என்று பல எழுத்தாளர்கள் முத்திரை பதித்த களம் அது. சமீப காலத்தில் அதற்கு இணையாக (அல்லது வன்முறையில் அதற்கும் மேலான) ஒரு புதிய களமாக Mediterranean Noir உருப்பெற்று வருகிறது. கொலை, கொள்ளை, வஞ்சகம், ஊழல், வன்முறை, சமூகத்தின் மீதான கோபம், cynicism இவற்றின் பண்புகள். இவ்வகையான கதை ஆசிரியர்களில் பிரபலமான ஒருவர் மாசிமோ கார்லோட்டோ. அமெரிக்க நுவார் கதைகள், கிரைம் கதைகள் போல் இல்லாது வன்முறை இவருடைய கதையில் ஒரு சராசரி அங்கம். அதற்கான ஞாயப்படுத்துதல்களோ, காரண காரியமோ, சரித்திரமோ இவருடைய கதையில் இருக்காது. பொளேர் என்று கன்னத்தில் அறைந்து விட்டு 'த்தா என்ன பாக்குற' என்பதே இவருடைய எழுத்து நடை. அமெரிக்க கதைகளை போல 'அவன் சின்ன பையனா இருக்கயில.....' என்பது மாதிரியான எந்தக் கருமமும் இவர் கதைகளில் இருக்காது. இவர் கதைகளில் ஹீரோக்கள் கிடையாது. நல்லவர்கள் அறவே கிடையாது. கதாநாயகர்கள் மேல் இரக்கமோ, பரிதாபமோ, நட்புணர்ச்சியோ சுத்தமாக ஏற்படாது. இவர்களுடைய வாழ்க்கையில் வன்முறை ஒரு சராச...

  சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்னர் “ Reflections ” ஃபேஸ்புக் க்ரூப்பில் ஒரு நீயா நானா வீடியோ பற்றிய விவாதம் நடந்தது. அந்த வீடியோ “நீங்கள் எப்படியெல்லாம் propose செய்யப்பட விரும்புகிறீர்கள்” என்று இளம் பெண்களிடம் கேட்டு அதற்கான அவர்களின் பதில் பற்றியது. அதற்கு வந்த பதில்கள் விசித்திரமானதாக மட்டுமல்லாமல் கவலைக்குரியதாகவும் இருந்தது. பெரும்பாலான பெண்களின் பதில், “சென்னையின் மொட்டை வெயிலில் கோட் சூட் போட்டுக் கொண்டு, ரூஃப் டாப் ரெஸ்டாரன்ட்டில் வைத்து, ஆயிரம் பேருக்கு மத்தியில், பேக்கிரௌண்ட் மியூசிக்குடன், ரோஸ் சாக்கலேட் உடன், முட்டி போட்டு, ப்ரோபோசல் ரிங் கொடுத்து, காதலிப்பாயா என்று கேட்காமல் என்னை கல்யாணம் செய்து கொள்வாயா” என்று கேட்க வேண்டும் என்பதாக இருந்தது. வெட்டியாக இருக்கும் போதெல்லாம் யூட்யூபில் ப்ரோபோசல் வீடியோஸ் பார்த்து கெட்டுப் போன கும்பல் இது என்று எளிதில் புறந்தள்ளி விட முடியாத அளவுக்கு இருத்தது  மிச்சப் பெண்களின் பதில். இந்த அளவுக்கு ரெஸ்டாரன்ட் செட்டிங் கேட்காத பிற பெண்கள் கூட இரண்டு விசயங்களில் ரொம்பவே தெளிவாக இருந்தார்கள். “ஒரு பெரிய கும்பலுக்கு மத்தியில் வைத்து...

American Tabloid is about bad men doing bad things to ensure that the history turns out just the way they want it to. And they are not afraid of doing sordid, dreadful, despicable, immoral (if not often contradictory) things to shape up history to their vision. Theirs is not the glorious pages of the history: the made-up moral conflicts, the glamorization or the idolization of the meek. They linger in the grimy shadows that helped lead history to its overblown glamorization. They don’t make the headlines. They exist between the lines, always ensuring the existence of the next one. In this world, there is no room for loyalty and every character abandons/kills/ maims/ exploits/ betrays at one point or another. But while they tend to exploit everyone around them, they must realize that there are some people who are hard to exploit; who got to their places in life by exploiting and not by being exploited. To those who have already read Sandman by Neil Gaiman and are accustomed to his writing style, American gods won't be much of a disappointment. It is standard Gaiman: good plot, good writing, a mostly poor execution with a deus-ex-machina ending. American gods is guilty of the same format. The idea of a war between old gods vs the gods of technology is admittedly intriguing and cool. If executed precisely, it could have been a thought provoking exercise on society's reverence & mad zeal for both and the profound implications it has on society as a whole and on individual people. But what we actually have is a shadow of a story(pun intended) which could have been great if it could have been treated much more seriously. Even the deus-ex-machina ending, which could have been made interesting with proper execution, feels like a dud and can be seen coming from a mile away. “The Big Sleep” by Raymond Chandler is about a private detective who gets caught up in the sordid affairs of a wealthy family involving blackmail, pornography, seduction and of course murder. After struggling through "The Big sleep", I can safely say that Chandler is all about atmosphere and he tries to smother you with the feel of the place while oblivious to the fact that the best stories are about people and not places. It is obvious that he loves the environment and he wishes that he was the detective. But trying to force feed one's love through a story is tantamount to raping the story for petty pleasures, which , here, is the similes like "she looked as attractive as a stray dog". Who gives a shit. Get on with the story and try to develop the characters rather. On which regard, Hammett, with all his faults, is a master.   The curious case of Benjamin Button by Scott Fitzgerald, as you might have known, is about a man who ages backwards. Benjamin starts out old, cranky, dejected, and submissive and grows to be adventurous, joyous, fun seeking and ends up innocent and childish. Even though it is said that it was a satire written in regard of the young men who died in WW1, who never had the chance to get old, I can't but feel that it is a satire on America, it's "discovery" and it's "formation", especially when Benjamin is born, his father keeps on insisting that he is only a boy, the grandfather grows accustomed eventually with him and considers him company and the rest of the world can’t get their head around the mere idea of it, not to mention the boy, who is completely baffled himself. பணவெறியும், பதவிவெறியும் நிறைந்த சந்தர்ப்பவாதிகளைக் கொண்ட அறமில்லாத சமூகம் தான் hard boiled கதைகளின் அடிநாதம் எனலாம். 1984, a novel based on a dystopian future, is about the everyday life of Winston Smith, his internal struggle, fear, his search for truth and the dire consequences it would bring. It talks about a world where there is no privacy, no freedom and which demands absolute loyalty and blind zeal. It is interesting to note that what Orwell talks about is perfectly possible. And what he talks about reflects upon human nature perfectly. Most of what Orwell says is psychological insight that only a cynic would be able to think of. And it would be most appealing to a cynic indeed. To a man immersed in routine and consumerism, it might sound stupid or in the worst case, hysterical. And a man immersed in the lurid lights of consumerism cannot understand the bleakness of what Orwell describes. While I was reading this book, a few questions kept nagging at me.
