ILLUMINATI

1984, a novel based on a dystopian future, is about the everyday life of Winston Smith, his internal struggle, fear, his search for truth and the dire consequences it would bring. It talks about a world where there is no privacy, no freedom and which demands absolute loyalty and blind zeal. It is interesting to note that what Orwell talks about is perfectly possible. And what he talks about reflects upon human nature perfectly. Most of what Orwell says is psychological insight that only a cynic would be able to think of. And it would be most appealing to a cynic indeed. To a man immersed in routine and consumerism, it might sound stupid or in the worst case, hysterical. And a man immersed in the lurid lights of consumerism cannot understand the bleakness of what Orwell describes. While I was reading this book, a few questions kept nagging at me. Is man so fragile minded as to accept fanaticism rather than to rebel against it? If so, what would be the extent of such fanaticism...

போதிய ஆதாரமின்றி எழுதப்பட்ட ஒரு கட்டுரைக்காக அவதூறு வழக்கு தொடரப்பட்டு, குற்றவாளியாகவும் தீர்ப்பளிக்கப்படும் மிக்கேல் ப்லாம்கிவிஸ்ட் பல காலமாக தான் சிறுகச் சிறுகச் சேர்த்து வைத்திருந்த நல்ல பெயருடன் தன்னுடைய சேமிப்புப் பணத்தையும் பறிகொடுக்கும் நிலையில் இருக்கிறான்.  தன்னுடைய தோழி  எரிகாவுடன் நடத்தி வரும் “மில்லேனியம்” பத்திரிகையின் நம்பகத்தன்மையும், நற்பெயரும், விற்பனையும் தன்னால் பாதிக்கப்படும் என்பதையும் உணர்த்து தன்னுடைய எடிட்டர் பதவியில் இருந்து ராஜினாமா செய்கிறான். மூன்று மாத சிறை, அபராதம், வேலையின்மை என செய்வதறியாது திணறும் மிக்கேலுக்கு  மிகப்பெரிய தொழில் அதிபர்களில் ஒருவரனான ஹென்றிக் வாக்னருடைய வக்கீலிடம் இருந்து  வாக்னரை வந்து நேரில் சந்திக்கமாறு  அழைப்பு வருகிறது. வாக்னரை நேரில் சந்திக்கும் மிக்கேலிடம் தன்னுடைய குடும்ப சரித்திரத்தைப் பற்றி  எழுதுவதான போர்வையில் நாற்பது வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னர் கொல்லப்பட்ட தன்னுடைய சகோரதனின் மகளான ஹாரியட்டின் கொலையாளியைக்  கண்டுபிடிக்கும் பணியை ஒப்படைக்கிறார். ஹாரியட்டை தன் குடும்பத்தில் ஒருவர் தான் கொன்றி...

  1. Vampyrus. Written by Michele Medda . Art by Nicola Mari. Demeter, a space lab, is found to have been attacked by unknown forces and the sole survivor is Vlad Shreck, a scientist, who has no memory of the attack due to amnesia caused by heavy blow to his head. Agent Nathan Never of the Alpha detective agency is assigned the job of discovering the attackers and the cause behind the attack. For those who haven’t guessed from the title, this story is a take on vampires or in particular, a vampire. The story borrows heavily from Dracula so much so that there is a character called Mina Harker, who, hypnotized, assists the vampire and some parts of the story, are explained via Diary notes. There is nothing new to be expected from the story and whatever part not influenced by Dracula fits the scifi thriller template perfectly. In the end, this is just a mashing up of Dracula and scifi and though the story is not bad, there is nothing revealing either. Only for a lig...
